The 10 Best Beaches in Dorset

From iconic arches to hidden fossil coves — with full parking, pricing, and dog policy for every beach.

Dorset's 95-mile coastline is one of the most spectacular in England — and it contains some of the finest beaches in the country. From the world-famous limestone arch at Durdle Door to the fossil-rich shores of Charmouth, from the wide golden sands of Weymouth to the secret shingle coves of the Purbeck coast, there is a Dorset beach for every type of visitor.

This guide covers the ten best beaches in Dorset, chosen for their beauty, accessibility, and what makes each one genuinely worth the visit. Every entry includes full details on parking, entry costs, and dog policy — so you can plan your day with confidence.

Before You Go: 5 Essential Tips

🌊
Check tide times: Many Dorset beaches change dramatically between high and low tide. Charmouth and Kimmeridge are best at low tide; Lulworth Cove is best at high tide. The Met Office app shows tide times for free.
🅿️
Book parking in advance: In July and August, the most popular car parks — Durdle Door, Lulworth, and Sandbanks — fill by 9am on sunny weekends. The RingGo and PayByPhone apps let you extend your stay without walking back to the car.
🐕
Know the dog rules: Most Dorset beaches have seasonal dog bans from 1st May to 30th September. Fixed penalty notices are issued. Always check the signs at the beach entrance, or use the dog-friendly filter on our Beaches directory.
🦺
Swim safely: Only swim at beaches with RNLI lifeguards on duty (typically late May to early September). Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Never swim at Chesil Beach — the currents are extremely dangerous.
🦴
Fossil hunting rules: You can collect loose fossils from the beach — but never dig into the cliffs. The cliffs are actively eroding and rockfalls happen without warning. The Charmouth Heritage Centre runs free guided walks.

Most Iconic🐕 Dog friendly all year

Durdle Door

BH20 5PU

No list of Dorset beaches would be complete without Durdle Door. The natural limestone arch — formed over 10,000 years of coastal erosion — is one of the most photographed sights in England. The shingle beach beneath it is dog-friendly all year and the swimming, while brisk, is spectacular. The 15-minute cliff walk down (and back up) is part of the experience.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Durdle Door Car Park, approx. £20/day. Note: NT membership does not apply here.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year, off lead.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

Arrive before 9am in July and August to get a parking space and beat the crowds. The view from the cliff path above is arguably better than the beach itself.

2
Best for Families🐾 Dogs on lead (seasonal)

Studland Bay (Knoll Beach)

BH19 3AQ

Four miles of soft, golden sand managed by the National Trust — Studland Bay is the finest sandy beach in Dorset and one of the best in England. The water is shallow and calm, making it ideal for young children. Knoll Beach in the centre has a brilliant café, toilets, and equipment hire for kayaking and paddleboarding. The dunes behind the beach are a nature reserve in their own right.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Knoll Beach NT Car Park. Free for NT members; non-members approx. £5–£6/day.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year but must be on a lead under 2m on the beach between 1st May and 30th September.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

The Sandbanks Ferry (BH13 7QJ) is the quickest route from Poole — a short chain ferry crossing that saves a 25-mile drive around the harbour.

3
Best for Fossil Hunting🐕 Dog friendly all year

Charmouth Beach

DT6 6LS

Charmouth is the fossil hunting capital of the Jurassic Coast. The cliffs here are packed with 190-million-year-old marine fossils — ammonites, belemnites, and ichthyosaur bones have all been found on this beach. After a storm or high tide, the foreshore is littered with fresh finds. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre runs free guided fossil walks and is one of the best visitor centres on the entire coast.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Large pay & display car park right next to the beach, approx. £6/day.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year. There's even a tap for rinsing them off afterwards.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

Visit within 2 hours of low tide for the best fossil hunting. Bring a small trowel and a bag. The Heritage Centre staff will help you identify anything you find — for free.

4
Best Classic Seaside🚫 Seasonal dog ban

Weymouth Beach

DT4 7BG

Weymouth is the quintessential British seaside experience. Three miles of fine, golden sand backed by a beautiful Georgian esplanade — it's been a favourite since King George III made it fashionable in the 1780s. The beach is consistently awarded Blue Flag status for water quality. Donkey rides, Punch and Judy, and a traditional pier complete the picture. The town centre is a five-minute walk from the beach.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Multiple pay & display car parks nearby. Pavilion and Swannery car parks are the closest, approx. £2/hour.

Dogs

Dogs not allowed on the main sandy beach from 1st May to 30th September. Welcome on the shingle east of the pier bandstand all year.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

The Nothe Fort (DT4 8UF) overlooks the beach and is well worth a visit — a Victorian coastal fort with stunning views across Weymouth Bay.

5
Most Beautiful Geology🐕 Dog friendly all year

Lulworth Cove

BH20 5RQ

Lulworth Cove is a geological masterpiece — an almost perfectly circular pebble bay formed when the sea breached the Portland limestone and carved into the softer rock behind. The sheltered waters are usually calm and clear, and the surrounding cliffs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village of West Lulworth has good pubs and a heritage centre explaining the cove's remarkable formation.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Lulworth Estate Car Park, approx. £20/day. Shared with Durdle Door visitors.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year on the left-hand side of the slipway.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

Walk the short path east from the cove to Stair Hole — a smaller, wilder cove where you can see the famous 'Lulworth Crumple', a dramatic fold in the rock strata that tells the story of ancient tectonic forces.

6
Best for Snorkelling🐕 Dog friendly all year

Kimmeridge Bay

BH20 5PF

Kimmeridge is Dorset's best-kept secret for underwater enthusiasts. Part of a Marine Conservation Zone, the sheltered rocky bay has a dedicated snorkel trail with underwater markers identifying the marine life you'll encounter — from sea anemones and wrasse to cuttlefish and spider crabs. The Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve runs a Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre right on the beach with equipment hire and expert advice.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Access via a private toll road. Toll approx. £6/car, includes parking.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year, off lead.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

Snorkelling is best at high tide when the water is deepest over the rock ledges. Wetsuits are strongly recommended — the water is cold even in August.

7
Best Hidden Cove🐕 Dog friendly all year

Worbarrow Bay

BH20 5DE

Worbarrow Bay is one of the most dramatic and unspoilt beaches on the entire Jurassic Coast. Accessible only by a one-mile walk from the ghost village of Tyneham (itself worth visiting), the bay is a wide, wild arc of shingle and sand with crystal-clear water and towering chalk cliffs. The MOD restricts access when the firing range is in use, which only adds to its wild, remote character.

Entry

Free beach access. Check MOD range dates before visiting: gov.uk/government/organisations/defence-infrastructure-organisation

Parking

Tyneham Village Car Park. A £2–£4 cash donation is requested via an honesty box.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year, off lead.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

Combine with a visit to Tyneham village — evacuated in 1943 and never returned to its residents. The church and schoolroom are preserved as they were left, with moving displays about the community.

8
Best for Swimming🚫 Seasonal dog ban

Sandbanks Beach

BH13 7QJ

Sandbanks consistently ranks among the top beaches in Britain for water quality and sand. The fine, pale sand and shallow, sheltered waters make it one of the safest and most pleasant swimming beaches in Dorset. The peninsula is also home to some of the most expensive real estate in the world — the contrast between the exclusive surroundings and the free, public beach is a very Dorset experience.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Sandbanks Surface Car Park (pay & display). Fills extremely quickly in summer — arrive before 9am.

Dogs

Dogs not allowed on the main beach from 1st May to 30th September. Designated dog area at the western end near the chain ferry.

💡

Alex's Insider Tip

The Sandbanks to Studland chain ferry (BH13 7QJ) runs from right next to the beach and is a fun 5-minute crossing. Foot passengers are free; cars pay a small toll.

9

Bowleaze Cove

DT3 6PW

If you're looking for a sandy beach where dogs are welcome all year round, Bowleaze Cove is the answer. Just east of Weymouth, this sheltered sandy cove has rock pools at low tide and a relaxed, local vibe. The Riviera Hotel on the clifftop has a café and bar with sea views, and there's free roadside parking along Bowleaze Coveway if you arrive early enough.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Pay & display car park behind the beach, or free roadside parking along Bowleaze Coveway.

Dogs

Dogs welcome all year round.

Alex's Insider Tip

The rock pools at low tide are excellent for children — crabs, shrimps, and small fish are easy to find. Bring a bucket and a net.

10
Best Town Beach🚫 Seasonal dog ban

Swanage Beach

BH19 1AW

Swanage is the most complete beach town in Dorset. The sandy bay is framed by a handsome Victorian pier, and the town behind it has excellent independent restaurants, ice cream shops, and a steam railway that runs to Corfe Castle. The Blue Flag waters are calm and clear, and the town has a genuinely friendly, community feel that sets it apart from the larger resorts.

Entry

Free beach access.

Parking

Main Beach Car Park on Victoria Avenue, approx. £6/day.

Dogs

Dogs not allowed on the main beach from 1st May to 30th September. Welcome all year at Monkey Beach at the northern end.
