A 20-acre walled garden founded in 1765, sheltered in a valley half a mile from the sea. Home to one of the finest collections of rare and exotic plants in the UK, including tree ferns, palms, and magnolias. Stunning in every season.

Wimborne Minster
The formal gardens surrounding the National Trust's Kingston Lacy house include a Japanese garden, fernery, parterre, and kitchen garden. The 8,500-acre estate has beautiful parkland walks too.
💡 The snowdrop walk in February is spectacular. Combine with a visit to the house.
Canford Cliffs, Poole
Ten distinct themed gardens on a clifftop overlooking Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills. Includes a Japanese garden, Roman garden, Italian garden, rock and water garden, and a woodland walk. One of the finest private gardens in England.
💡 Allow 2–3 hours to explore all ten gardens. The Japanese garden is particularly beautiful.
Beaminster
Described by Country Life as 'the finest manor house in England', Mapperton's terraced gardens cascade down a valley below the house. Formal upper gardens give way to wild lower gardens with fish ponds and an orangery.
💡 The gardens are only open March–October. The house is open on selected days.
Cranborne
A romantic and historic garden surrounding a Jacobean manor house, laid out in the early 17th century. Famous for its walled garden, herb garden, and mount garden. The garden centre sells unusual plants propagated on the estate.
💡 Open Wednesdays and Sundays, March–September. The garden centre is open year-round.
Puddletown
One of England's finest medieval manor houses, surrounded by Grade I listed formal gardens. The Great Court, with its famous topiary pyramids and fountains, is a masterpiece of Edwardian garden design.
💡 Open most days March–October. The house and gardens can be visited together.
Minterne Magna
A wild woodland garden in a beautiful Dorset valley, famous for its spring display of rhododendrons, azaleas, and cherries. The garden follows a stream through a series of cascades and small lakes.
💡 Best visited April–May for the rhododendron and azalea display. The garden is at its most spectacular in spring.
Pallington, Dorchester
A unique outdoor sculpture garden set in 26 acres of lakes, meadows, and woodland near Dorchester. Over 100 sculptures by Simon Gudgeon are displayed in a beautiful natural setting. Peaceful and thought-provoking.
💡 Allow 2–3 hours. The café serves excellent food. Stunning in all seasons.
Sherborne
The 'new' Sherborne Castle, built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, sits within 42 acres of Capability Brown-designed pleasure grounds. The lake, created in 1756, is a centrepiece of one of England's finest 18th-century landscapes.
💡 Open April–October, Thursday–Sunday and Bank Holidays. Combine with a visit to the old castle ruins nearby.
Chard (near Thorncombe)
Thirty acres of award-winning gardens surrounding a 12th-century Cistercian monastery. Features include a bog garden, rock garden, kitchen garden, and the spectacular Centenary Fountain — one of the highest powered fountains in England.
💡 Open daily. The kitchen garden produces vegetables for the excellent on-site restaurant.
Bournemouth
Bournemouth's award-winning Lower, Central, and Upper Gardens form a two-mile ribbon of green through the town centre, with the Bourne Stream running through them. Beautiful in summer with bedding plants and a bandstand.
💡 The Lower Gardens host free concerts in summer. The Pavilion Theatre is at the seafront end.
Poole
A 140-acre country park on the shores of Poole Harbour, with formal walled gardens, woodland walks, and a heritage centre in the Georgian Upton House. Free to enter and popular with families.
💡 The walled garden is beautifully maintained. Look out for wading birds on the harbour foreshore.
