Exceptional · One of Dorset's finest

Hidden down a quiet lane off the A35 between Dorchester and Poole, Athelhampton House is one of the finest examples of 15th-century domestic architecture in England. Built in 1485 by Sir William Martyn, Lord Mayor of London, this Grade I listed manor house has been continuously inhabited for over 500 years and remains privately owned today.

The house is surrounded by 15 acres of award-winning formal gardens — a series of eight interconnected garden rooms enclosed by walls of Ham stone and ancient yew hedges. The Great Court with its famous topiary pyramids, the Corona with its circular pool, and the walled White Garden are among the most photographed gardens in Dorset.

Inside the house, visitors can explore the Great Hall with its original Tudor fireplace, the magnificent oriel window, and a series of beautifully furnished rooms spanning five centuries of English history. Thomas Hardy was a frequent visitor and immortalised the house as "Athelhall" in his novel The Woodlanders.

The estate also offers a charming tearoom serving light lunches, cream teas, and homemade cakes — the perfect end to a morning's exploration. Self-catering holiday cottages and B&B rooms in the historic gatehouse are available for those who want to stay longer.
