A legendary beachside café famous for its fresh seafood platters on Chesil Beach.
Hive Beach Café has become something of a Dorset institution. Sitting right on the beach at Burton Bradstock, at the western end of Chesil Beach, it's the kind of place that locals guard jealously and visitors never forget.
The café is famous for its seafood — and rightly so. The fish is landed just yards from the door by local fishermen, and the kitchen turns it into beautifully simple dishes that let the quality of the ingredients shine. The seafood platter is legendary: Portland crab, Lyme Bay scallops, smoked mackerel, prawns, and fresh bread. It's the kind of meal you'll talk about for years.
But Hive Beach Café isn't just about seafood. The homemade cakes are exceptional (the chocolate brownie has a cult following), the coffee is excellent, and there's always a hearty soup and a daily special for those who prefer something warm.
The setting is what makes it truly special. The terrace looks directly out over the dramatic shingle beach, with the golden sandstone cliffs of Burton Bradstock rising behind. On a sunny day, there are few better places to eat in the whole of England.
Note: the café operates on a first-come, first-served basis — no bookings. Arrive early in summer to avoid queues.
